When you of destiny, Sergey Brin (and Larry Page) were working on a project that had nothing to do with a search engine. That’s how Google was born. Today it is the most powerful and fastest search engine in the world.
Brin was born in the Soviet Union but immigrated to the United States with his family at the age of six.
He was president of the parent company of Google, Alphabet Inc. (a US company founded in 2015.) Today Sergey is dedicating himself to his other passions: investments in various fields and the search for new technologies.
This is another story that is incredible and can teach a lot.
If you are an entrepreneur you need to know it. If you are not, but you want to improve your life (both from an economic, social, and personal point of view) there is a moral to be had.
Continue reading while I explain this amazing success experience.
Sergey Brin studied computer science and mathematics at the prestigious Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, Maryland.
After school, he enrolled at Stanford University to continue his studies in what would be his true passion: research.
His origins are not American: Sergey Brin was born in Moscow, in the Soviet Union, on August 21, 1973.
His father, Michail Brin, was a researcher in mathematics at the University of Maryland; his mother, Eugenia Brin worked as a programmer at NASA.
Thanks to the latter Sergey approaches computer science and programming:
“My mother taught me BASIC when I was ten – says Sergey in the book A Brief History of Everything – I was fascinated by the fact that I could have anything done to the computer. Gradually I started developing more complex programs.”
In 1981 the Brin family emigrated to the United States. “I was a very curious child – continues Sergey in the book – I liked reading everything I could find.
In America, I had access to a lot of information that was not available in the Soviet Union, and this allowed me to learn very quickly.”
Sergey attended Montgomery Blair High School, an institute specializing in mathematics and science, where he graduated in 1991.
In the same year, he was admitted to the University of Maryland, but a few months later he decided to move to Stanford to continue his studies.
It is during his stay in California that Sergey Brin meets Larry Page: the two share a passion for research and, together, they begin to develop the project that will lead to the birth of Google.
As we said, Sergey Brin and Larry Page had no intention of creating a search engine when they started their studies at Stanford University.
The two young researchers wanted to develop a method to sort the information on the network according to its importance:
“We thought – says Sergey – that if it were possible to analyze the content of all the documents on the network, it would be possible to obtain a ranking based on their relevance.”
The project took shape in 1996 when the two students developed the first prototype of the search engine. “It was very different from Google as we know it now – continues Sergey – but it allowed us to understand how important the technology we had created was.”
In 1998, the two students decided to leave their studies to concentrate on the project’s development.
The first investments come from Andy Bechtolsheim, co-founder of Sun Microsystems, and Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon.com.
In September 1998, Sergey and Larry created Google Inc., a company that would become a global giant in a few years.
In 2015, after 17 years at the helm of Google, Sergey Brin leaves the presidency of the company to focus on other projects.
Google’s parent company, Alphabet Inc., was founded the same year. “We created Alphabet – explains Sergey – to allow Google to continue to grow and develop in many different sectors, from research to artificial intelligence, from medicine to power.”
Today Sergey Brin continues to work for Alphabet Inc. as chairman of the board, but he is also dedicated to other projects such as Dandelion Energy, a renewable wind energy company, and Planetary Ventures LLC, a company that deals with space projects.
Sergey Brin and Larry Page have had to face many difficulties over the years, both personally and professionally.
The first problem was to make Google grow exponentially. “We were not prepared for such a success – says Sergey in the book A brief history of everything – and we had to learn very quickly”.
Another problem was maintaining the quality of the services offered by Google. “Over the years we have had to face many challenges – continues Sergey – from the launch of new products to the management of criticisms.”
The two founders also had to deal with growing competition. “We have always tried to do our best – concludes Sergey – and we are proud of the results obtained.”
Despite the problems encountered over the years, Sergey Brin managed to maintain a healthy level of stress. “I learned to manage the pressure – he says. I have always remained focused on the goals I had set for myself.”
The founder of Google has always remained focused on the objectives. “I have never lost sight of my goal – he concludes – and this has allowed me to overcome all the difficulties I encountered.”
Sergey Brin managed to overcome all the difficulties he encountered thanks to his willpower and determination.
The founder of Google never gave up. “I have always tried to do my best – he says – and I am proud of what we have accomplished.”
Even if it is not always easy, Sergey tries not to get overwhelmed. “I think it is important to control your emotions – he continues – and learn to manage them in a positive way.”
