If you want a world with fewer dangerous, never-ending fires. A world with less rain and intense thunderstorms, floods, and cyclones. Fewer areas with extreme drought. Then we have to rely on the help of artificial intelligence.
It has the potential to save our planet from the dangers of nature infuriated by us.
AI helps build climate models to simulate current weather conditions and make predictions.
It has the ability to translate raw environmental data into categories that humans can understand in this way.
The climate data collected by artificial intelligence programs can be used to save water and energy.
I’m not saying we shouldn’t reduce pollution too. The objective of the global western governments in the coming years is to make human activity less impactful.
“The climatic warming we have been witnessing for about 150 years is anomalous: it is called the anthropogenic greenhouse effect and is added to the natural greenhouse effect”.
With the industrial revolution, man suddenly spilled millions of tons of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. It has thus brought the quantity of Co2 present in the atmosphere to double the minimum of the last 700 thousand years.
Here is how artificial intelligence can be of great help to us. Though many are suspicious and think it is something dangerous, to stay away from.
Let me show you one of the many ways it can be used to save the Earth.
THE STUDY FROM AN ITALIAN UNIVERSITY
A team of scientists from an Italian university – the Cmcc Foundation and the Ca ‘Foscari University of Venice – conducted a very important study.
It is called “Exploring machine learning potential for climate change risk assessment”.
They answered the question with an in-depth analysis of over 1200 articles on the subject published over the past 20 years.
The use of this data highlighted the potential of machine learning in this area.
“By simulating the processes of the human brain, some mathematical algorithms are able to understand the relationships between a series of input data in order to predict the required output.”
Having said that, the researchers focused in particular on floods and landslides, according to them they are the most relevant and frequent events globally.
Here’s what the algorithm can do by analyzing these phenomena:
The more data it has, the more the algorithm learns. It analyzes and processes them in large quantities.
They can combine data of different types, allowing them to assess the extent of risk-taking into account all the causes.
The causes include not only the danger that triggers it (for example an increase in rainfall) but also the vulnerability and exposure of the socio-economic system on which the danger strikes.
The latter determine factors in the quantification of the impacts.
What the Italian university has just discovered is something as profound as an analysis.
However, there are qualities that this technology gives us that are simple but essential.
FIVE STRATEGIES TO ADDRESS CLIMATE CHANGE
1 – Better climate predictions:
Artificial intelligence guides researchers in predicting more accurate weather conditions. Like tropical cyclones, weather fronts, and atmospheric rivers – with an accuracy of 89 to 99 percent.
“So it helps keep people safe from extreme events.”
Artificial intelligence can recognize patterns of environmental climate data that humans cannot identify, make better predictions, and recommend efficient climate policies.
2- Visualization of the impacts of extreme weather conditions:
Researchers from Microsoft, Montreal Institute for Learning Algorithms (MILA), and ConscientAI Labs built a CycleGAN model based on artificial intelligence.
It is able to show the likely effects of climate change on a particular position of the Earth.
It produces images of that location before and after extreme weather events.
They are also using this system to study glacier melting.
3- Monitoring the level of atmospheric carbon:
AI can measure greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, identify sources and recommend the best solutions to reduce them.
There’s IBM’s Green Horizon project in China, which can predict air pollution, track sources, and devise appropriate strategies to manage emissions.
4- Optimize the supply chain:
It can reduce carbon emissions in the supply chains of the food industry, consumer goods, and fashion by optimizing transport routes.
That is, he advises which way to go and to network with the various industries to minimize pollution.
5- Improve monitoring of deforestation:
Deforestation adds about 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
Trees absorb the carbon dioxide emitted by human activities. Artificial intelligence helps monitor forest health.
Silviaterra, a San Francisco-based company, has partnered with Microsoft to predict the size and health of forests using AI technology and satellite imaging.
HOW TO AVOID THE WORST DISASTER
In case you were not aware, compared to pre-industrial levels, the average temperature of the planet has increased by 0.98 degrees centigrade.
“And the trend observed from 2000 to today suggests that, in the absence of interventions, it could reach +1.5 ° C between 2030 and 2050”.
The impact of global warming is already evident: Arctic sea ice has decreased by an average of 12.85% per decade.
While the coastal tide registers show an average increase of 3.3 millimeters in sea level since 1870.
In short, we are close to natural disasters if we go on like this. Unless, tomorrow we all stop using our car, and produce food ourselves on the land around our homes. We will need to stop using all the electricity we use.
The only solution is to rely on technology that will direct us to this subtle balance between industrialized countries, comfort, and well-being that nature gives us, increasing our respect for the Earth.
