The First European Astronauts

AstroSamantha (her name on Twitter) was the first Italian woman (and the third European) to go into space.

It happened between 2014 and 2015. Afew weeks ago, Samantha Cristoforetti returned to space for the second time as part of the Crew4 crew of the Dragon Freedom shuttle space mission.

She achieved her dream of traveling, an experience she had since childhood. Maybe as a child she didn’t think she would even go into space.

The point is that she has entered the realm of people who have accomplished something extraordinary.

It’s worth understanding how she got so high (in all meanings Lol!) because like other men and women whose story I have told, she teaches lessons that teache us a lot.

AS A CHILD SHE FLEW WITH HER FATHER

Samantha Cristoforetti is an Italian astronaut with NASA.

Born on April 26, 1977 in Milan, Italy. Cristoforetti grew up aboard an Italian Air Force C-130 military transport aircraft. Her father was a pilot and her mother was a nurse.

Her parents often worked abroad, so Cristoforetti lived in many different countries, including Germany, Belgium, Canada and the

United States. Cristoforetti speaks five languages: Italian, English, German, French and Russian.

She initially studied in the United States with the Intercultura program and attended Saint Paul Central High School in Saint Paul, Minnesota for one year.

She then received a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the Technical University of Munich, Germany.

In 2004, she also received a three-year degree in Aeronautical Sciences at the Department of Political Sciences of the Federico II University of Naples.

The Italian astronaut began her career as a pilot in 2001 in the aeronautical academy of Pozzuoli, later achieving the rank of Captain.

Eight years later, she entered the academy: she was selected by the European Space Agency, where five years later, she became the first Italian astronaut to perform a space flight.

In 2006, she specialized in America with the Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training program, becoming a war pilot assigned to the 132nd Flight Group of the 51st Wing of Istrana in Italy.

After several years of active duty, she announced her leave from the Air Force in 2019.

THE FIRST LAP IN SPACE

The First European Astronauts

On November 23, 2014, Samantha Cristoforetti left for her first space mission, the Futura.

She is the first Italian woman (and the third European) to arrive at the International Space Station (ISS).

Samantha Cristoforetti spent 200 days in space, from November 23rd to June 11, 2015, beating the record for the longest mission carried out by a European astronaut and also becoming the woman with the longest mission in space.

During the Futura mission, the Italian astronaut participated in numerous scientific and experimental activities.

For example, Samantha Cristoforetti contributed to the making of the film “The Steps of the Universe,” shot in space by director Luca Parmitano.

She also did yoga in Zero-G video with other astronauts and published a children’s book, titled “Samantha in Space.”

On June 11, 2015, Samantha Cristoforetti returns to Earth after a 200-day mission in space, landing with the Soyuz TMA-15M capsule in the Kazakh Steppe.

On her return she was awarded the Gold Medal for Civil Merit, the highest honor given by the President of the Italian Republic.

She also received the Giuseppe Garibaldi International Prize, the National Astronomy Prize, the Leonardo Prize for Culture and Cosmic Science in memory of Margherita Hack.

POST-SPACE LIFE

In 2016, Samantha Cristoforetti left the European Space Agency to return to the Italian Air Force as a flight instructor on F-35 fighters at the 32nd Wing of the Air Force in Cameri, Piedmont.

Today Samantha Cristoforetti is a youtuber and Tiktoker with over 2 million followers.

Her videos are followed by thousands of people who are interested in her stories about life in space and her flying experiences.

Cristoforetti has also published two books, “Sognare the infinity” and “Raggi di Sole,” in which she tells her story and adventures in space.

In her video clips on TikTok she has had enormous success with her hilarious videos where she plays games and activities in zero-gravity making her fans laugh.

She also does physical activity like you have never seen before.

THE LAUNCH OF CREW

As announced in 2021, on April 27, 2022 came the launch of the Crew4, the crew Dragon spacecraft named Freedom, built by NASA and SpaceX.

Astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti would be the first Italian to go to space thanks to the collaboration between the European Space Agency and SpaceX.

Samantha Cristoforetti was launched together with three other astronauts, the Shannon Walker – American, Soichi Noguchi- Japanes and Thomas Pesquet – European.

During the space mission she became the leader of several experiments, collaborated with universities and research centers.

THE STRENGTH OF A CURIOUS WOMAN

The First European Astronauts

She had already broken a lot of records. She had become famous for mainstreaming and famous in the social media world.

Samantha had already arrived, but the driving force of something that people often underestimate is the drive to be part of another mission, with the same desire and motivation that she had in 2014.

“I really wanted to come back a second time to have a little more margin, from emotions, to better realize everything. Now I have the opportunity to observe the situation better and maybe even remember it more precisely.

She has also been involved in testing a tool to carry out robotics operations: with her hand she moved the hand of a robot, remotely, to carry out operations that will be useful in future space or Mars explorations”

A broader perspective is also needed on Space: it is part of our life, of our technological progress, and of our economic resources, for example “to intervene on issues such as climate change”, she explained.

From all this, we can see her thirst for knowledge driven by a great curiosity. The desire to discover and improve the world through technology.

If there is any passion or sector that explains her curiosity to the point of wanting to understand to the smallest detail, here is that thirst of curiosity and knowledge.

I’m sure it will take you far. Maybe not in space, but you will achieve greater results than the average profession or in an activity you do.
