Alice and her mother would often paint watercolors on camping trips.

Her interest in art led the Walton Family Foundation to develop the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas.

Alice Louise Walton was born on October 7, 1949. She is an American heiress to the fortune of Walmart.

In September 2016, she owned over $11 billion USD in Walmart shares. As of March 2022, Walton has a net worth of $60.5 billion, making her the 20th-richest person, and the second richest woman in the world according to Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

THE REBEL HEIRESS

The heir to the Walmart empire, with a fortune of $60.5 billion, manages to maintain little public life despite some setbacks.

SHE MAINTAINS A SIMPLE LIFESTYLE DESPITE HER WEALTH

Alice Walton lived for a long time in the French Quarter of New Orleans.

As the heiress to the distribution giant Walmart, she has become the richest woman in the world.

Those who know her describe her as an austere woman. But the question would be: is it technically possible to behave simply with an estimated fortune of 60.5 billion dollars?

At 73 years old, the heiress of the Walmart empire and ninth on the Forbes list of billionaires, her best-known expenses are collecting works of art and raising horses. However, despite her immense wealth, her private life remains largely unknown.

The daughter of Helen Robson, an art lover, and Sam Walton, the founder of the great Walmart chain, married on February 14, 1943, after meeting in a bowling alley. Alice was described by her father as “the most like me, a rebel, but even more volatile.”

TASTES AND HOBBIES

At 73, she collects art, likes to raise horses, and supported Hillary Clinton despite her Republican family.

A few years before climbing to the top of the billionaire throne, Alice spent most of her time at Rocking W Ranch, in Millsap, Texas, a small town of 500 inhabitants, where she raised race horses and cooked her famous beans, rancheros with rice.

In 2017 she won 1,460 acres from an investment group, along with her 1,200-square-meter house, barn, and a large tract of land facing the Rivers Arm that could have passed for a huge golf course.

Before becoming the world’s richest woman, Alice Walton studied business administration in San Antonio until earning a bachelor’s degree in economics and finance from Trinity University in 1971.

At first, she worked as a children’s clothing buyer at Walmart, the largest retail chain in the US. She soon moved to the French Quarter of New Orleans to live among historic turn-of-the-century buildings.

HER WEALTH MADE FINDING LOVE A CHALLENGE

Why some rich people mostly fall out of love with their partners is not understood to date. It’s easier for them to fall in love and only 60% find genuine love while the remaining 40% tend to have their spouses only falling in love with them because of what they stand to gain in the relationship.

Would we say the same in the case of Alice?

In 1974, at age 25, she met a prominent investment banker in Louisiana and they got married but later divorced. Alice remarried a little later to the contractor who set up her pool for her, but she quickly re-divorced and healed her wounds by helping manage the family’s investments. She never had children, despite granting that to her horses.

HOW ALICE SPENDS HER FORTUNE

Alice, the youngest of four children born to Sam Walton and Helen Robson, grew up in Bentonville, Arkansas in the US.

The little girl from the Walmart clan spent a good part of her youth away from the media spotlight, oblivious to the fact that she would end up becoming the queen mother of the business aristocracy.

Here’s what The New York magazine published of her look in 2011: “Walton doesn’t look like an expensive Park Avenue matron: her face is tanned and weather-beaten and shows no signs of having been under the knife.”

“She wears her steel gray hair pulled back in a messy bun. For a very rich person, she lives relatively modestly.”

“Her ranch house in Texas has only one floor and when her guests visit her, she cooks dinner herself, even though she has hired help.”

Alice knows the price of lettuce because she considers that knowing the value of things is part of any business, “to buy the best lettuce you can at the best possible price,” as she has stated more than once.

Something similar was said by her father, Sam Walton “she controls your expenses better than any of your competitors. That’s where you can take advantage.”

She took in twice, never had children, and became an art collector after buying a print of Picasso’s “Blue Nude.” She spends most of her fortune on art and plans to continue purchasing them.

THE KEY TO HER SUCCESS

– She has good resource management skills.

– She controls her expenses.

– She considers knowing the value of things as part of any business.

– She does many things herself. She is not doing them because she can’t afford to pay for services, and wants to know the value of what she purchases.

She doesn’t feel like the world revolves around her, despite her wealth.

She has not let depression take the better part of her no matter what she has been through.

Her life wasn’t that smooth even as a billionaire. There were instances she had several accidents, went through surgery, heartbreaks, divorce, and rejection. She still remained strong and vowed to live her life to the fullest by doing the things that make her happy. One of them is creating art.

In today’s world, it is very difficult not to identify a rich personality because they like to show off their wealth. But in the case of Alice Walton, the difference is worth emulating.
