Coming from a family whose parents were both teachers with his father earning $7 monthly. Lei Jun must have been feeling like a cursed child but guess what? He didn’t allow his father’s financial status to limit him. Now, he is ranked as the 190th richest person worldwide.
His parent’s profession, which was teaching, was considered a “disgraceful profession” after the Cultural Revolution.
I can Imagine Lei’s Dad was asking himself, how a salary of $7 would feed his family and send Lei to college.
Lei Jun was fond of playing with electronics, he liked dissembling radios and repairing them. His father was very supportive.
He made the first electric lamb in his village by using two batteries, a bulb, and a handmade wooden box with some wires. He was a genius at a very tender age.
Lei Jun was born on 16th December 1969. He is a Chinese billionaire, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. He is known for founding the consumer electronics company Xiaomi.
As of August 2022, Lei Jun’s net worth was estimated at $11.7 billion USD according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, making him the 118th richest person in the world. Forbes ranks him 190th worldwide at $10 billion.
He graduated from Mianyang middle school in 1987 and later attended Wuhan University where he graduated in 1991 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in computer science. During his last year in college, He founded His first company, “Gundugoms.”
Lei joined Kingsoft as an engineer in 1992 and became the CEO of the company. He resigned in 1998 as president and CEO of Kingsoft on December 20th, 2007, due to health reasons.
From making a lamb in his father’s backyard to building a device that has made waves in the world of technology. He was determined to succeed.
Who would have thought that a kid that played with electronics would be famous today, listed among the richest men in the world?
Do you see passion playing its role here? Yes!
In 2000, Lei founded Joyo.com, an online bookstore, which he later sold for $75 million to Amazon.com in 2004.
In 2005, Lei made a $1 million investment whose shares were worth $129 million when the company became public through an initial public offering in 2012.
In 2008, he became the chairman of UCWeb.
In 2010, Lei Jun founded Xiaomi, a technology company that manufactures smartphones, mobile apps, and other consumer electronics. Bravo!
In 2011, He co-founded Shunwei Capital, an investment company that invests in companies in the e-commerce, social networking, and mobile industries. He rejoined Kingsoft as chairman in the same year.
In 2013, he was appointed as a delegate to the National People’s Congress. He is also engaged in politics. Interesting right?
You will agree with me that Lei was a man of many talents and capabilities, He didn’t let his family background or his father’s financial status influence his dream of becoming a computer scientist. In 2014, He was named the “Businessman of the year,” by Forbes.
What if He gave up along the way?
By 2017, Lei had donated $1 billion to charity starting with his alma mater, Wuhan University.
He later made donations to Zhuhai Charity, an organization that funds schools for migrants and the villagers of Yangchun for the renovation of schools and mud brick houses and construction of cultural buildings, the villagers and victims of the 2013 Lushan earthquake, and was a participant in the Ice Bucket Challenge to raise funds for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).
In 2021, He donated over $2.2 billion worth of Xiaomi shares to charity. Such a big heart!
Lei Jun’s story conjures life questions about human existence. Sometimes there are situations where you find yourself and don’t know what to do.
In times like this, you need to examine yourself and discover your potential by asking yourself some questions.
Need Ideas on how to discover your natural potential? By answering the following questions:
– What I’m I good at?
– What do I love doing?
– What gives me joy?
– Will I be happy doing this?
– What will my future look like if I do this?
– What if I get old, will I still be able to live my life successfully if I stop doing this?
Will my family be able to continue from where I stopped?
The list is endless. Ask yourself these questions.
I remember when I was trying to choose a career for myself, my mom asked me the above questions and told me to analyze myself with them.
She would always say, do something you love so much and can do even if you wake up from sleep right now! That was it.
Now the question is:
– What if Lei’s father didn’t allow him to practice and follow his passion right from childhood? What do you think would have been his fate?
– Do you think Lei would be among the richest people in the entire world today if he was forced to go into another field of study?
– As a parent, do you choose careers for your kids?
Lei had confidence in himself. His father has confidence in him or he wouldn’t have supported his dreams.
Jun saw the potential in his son and he encouraged him to achieve his dreams.
Some parents would have said, “Lei, I want you to be a doctor” but he nurtured the potential in his son.
Believe in yourself and what you can do. Never limit yourself because of the situation you find yourself in.
Imagine if Lei said, ” oh my parents are teachers and my dad is only earning $7 monthly, how will I succeed in the field of science and technology?” He would have still been in the same situation today. He probably wouldn’t have attended college.
The worst thing that can happen to a man is dwelling in the past or allowing his family background to be a barrier between him and his success. Things can only get better if you believe in yourself and put in the effort to make things work out.
Stop saying I can’t do this, and focus on how to find a way to do it. The limitation of impossibility is a lazy man’s excuse!
Even the word impossible has “I’m possible” in it! Do you see that you can do it now?
Yes! You can build that dream house!
Yes, you can buy that dream car!
Yes, you can take up that course and come out with excellent results!
Yes, you can live your dream life and travel the world!
Be positive, pronounce positive words, and make good and positive declarations every morning. Say to yourself “I can do this.”
Even if you try and fail, rise and try again, it doesn’t matter how many times you fail, the most important thing is that you did it despite all odds.
The saying that you are rich because you are born into a rich family and you are poor because you come from a poor background is a fallacy.
You are a product of your actions, you can come from a rich family and still be poor if you don’t know how to manage resources.
Your mindset also plays an important role in your life. Yes! That’s why you need to always be positive. Start from where you are, with what you have.
Remember Lei didn’t have it all at the beginning, It didn’t take him one morning to become a CEO. He paid his dues, leading to his success by making use of what he had.
Make a move, start that project, and stop procrastinating. Make a move to succeed.
You can be a source of inspiration to someone tomorrow if only you do not limit yourself. The sky is big enough to accommodate everyone.
