The electricity of the future will work like love. This is the challenge science will have for the next decade

According to the Statistical and Analytical Agency of the US Department of Energy, world energy consumption will grow by almost 50% between 2019 and 2050.


But fortunately for this challenge, scientists are developing a way of producing energy that is the same as the stars in space and even the sun.


This system is called nuclear fusion. And unlike fission (the one that splits the atom) this is clean and does not produce radioactive waste. As it happens in fact in the nuclear power plants of today.


It is a technology that will not be ready in a very short time. But the researchers are moving forward fast.


Like this milestone;


“On 8 August of this year, scientists from the National Ignition Facility (NIF) of the American laboratory Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) achieved a very important result. They managed to generate a 1.3 MJ pulse of energy with thermonuclear fusion”


It is a super result that will remain in history. Because the experiment achieved a yield of about 70%, still setting a world record.




When it comes to nuclear fusion it is understood that; The nuclei of two or more atoms are pushed to get close to the point of joining and merging. Thus a new nucleus is created, with a mass that can be greater or less than the previous one.


This process is the same one that powers the stars in space. And as I said above it also feeds the Sun.


In fact, energy is generated inside the core of a star through the nuclear fusion process.


Basically, we are simply copying what is already happening in our universe. Precisely what gives us life on Earth.


This process reminds me of the energy I feel when I am with beautiful people and a union is created. A friend for example.


Or even the energy that exists between two people who love each other and are together. It is just an example and does not do science. But that’s what this stuff makes me think about. Yes I know I’m romantic 🙂

I am convinced that there are many similarities that perhaps science is not yet able to demonstrate at the moment.


But let’s continue the explanation …


Fusion must be distinguished from fission. I want to repeat it so that there is no misunderstanding. The latter is the devil, the other is holy water. This is a proverb used in Italy. I am an almost millionaire Italian entrepreneur. To make myself understood by my collaborators, I sometimes also use proverbs.


The fission is that of the atomic bomb that destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the nuclear energy that caused the Chernobyl and Fukushima disaster. The devil.


It is dangerous because it divides the atom, which is a smaller matter particle. And we shouldn’t do it because we mess with nature. And in fact, that broken matter is radioactive waste.


Atoms are like Lego bricks. You can’t take the knife and cut them into even smaller pieces. Pieces are created that can no longer be used because they do not fit together with others.

And this is the real luck for us. It would be clean energy.


The products that come out of this clean nuclear reaction are a neutron (carrier of the energy produced) and helium, a chemically inert noble gas.


How would researchers then like to produce electrical energy from fusion? Is simple;


“The thermal energy produced must be transformed into electricity with mechanisms similar to those used when using other energy sources.”


But with all the thermal energy that is produced with fusion there is a crazy potential. At the moment, however, everything is at a standstill…


1. The pressure it takes to fuse the nuclei of atoms. And at the same time keep the whole situation under control.


2. To date, a material has not yet been found that is capable of containing the gases of the melting process which is at high temperatures, and the heating techniques are particularly complex.


Nowadays they use a magnetic field to contain the gases but it is not enough.


Therefore we are not able yet to produce energy through a controlled fusion reaction, nor to produce more energy than it takes to trigger the fusion itself.


A result is expected within the next 10 years. And it would be important because renewable energies are not enough.

In 2020, fossil fuels produced 37.2% of the world’s electricity. Renewable sources produced 38.0%.

This was explained on the BP website in the section “Energy economics – Statistical review of world energy”. It is the famous British Petroleum, the English company present in the energy, petroleum and natural gas industry.

As you can see, a large chunk of electricity is always produced by petroleum. If that were not the case, we would not be able to satisfy all countries.

And the US is not doing very well in this ecological revolution.

President Joe Biden said a few days ago that he wants an electricity grid powered by one hundred percent clean energy by 2035. To then get to the net zero of all carbon dioxide emissions by 2050. But at the moment in the US renewable sources are 12% of the total ones.

Maybe Biden didn’t take this into account;

“Between 1973 and 2015, the world’s primary energy consumption more than doubled. If there had not been interventions for energy efficiency, some studies show that in 2016 the world could have consumed 20% more energy.”

Something similar to this will happen in the next few years. As I said, at the beginning by 2050 the consumption of electricity will grow by 50%.

So you install more solar and wind panels and at the same time it takes more electricity.

In other words, this is like a cat trying to bite its own tail.


I’ll go straight to the point, letting an authoritative voice speak:

According to Shellenberger, president of Environmental Progress and expert reviewer of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC):

“Renewable energies are simply unable to sustain our current lifestyle.”

Why? Is simple; people are unwilling to give up all the benefits of modern life to return to a kind of romantic pre-industrial age.

In fact, let’s forget it. As mentioned above we will need more electricity. Let’s just think about the mobility that is becoming electric. And to all the appliances we have in the house.

Without electricity, our civilization would not exist. So at the moment of the gas we can not do without.

And the only alternative to leap into the future is nuclear fusion. According to experts, the turning point on this energy source will take place within the next ten years.
