The e-commerce company Amazon recently hired new fully autonomous robots. He introduced a couple of them – Proteus and Cardinal – and they are all equipped with advanced artificial intelligence that makes them capable of carrying out numerous tasks in storage warehouses.
The two super-efficient robots, which integrate seamlessly with the workers, were unveiled at the MARS event in Las Vegas.
They have managed to integrate with employees, but how many e-commerce workers will their jobs stolen?
This question was answered by Bezos’ own company with a very articulate answer. You will read about this later.
It is interesting to understand the extraordinariness of these robots because if they were accessible in small numbers, all of us would want one in our homes.
They are a bit like a handyman or grandmother. You know? In short, a selfless and kind neighbor. The difference is they do not speak and are not nice.
PROTEUS: THE GOD OF THE SEA ABLE TO TRANSFIGURE
The first robot that Amazon hired is called Proteus, like the divinity of the sea capable of transformation.
Proteus is similar to an autonomous forklift truck and can move around people.
It has 12 robotic arms and 3 rotating (flat) skillets. Its main task is to load and unload product containers from the truck to the warehouse and vice versa.
Moreover, thanks to its small size (it is only 2.4 meters high), it can work in any space.
CARDINAL: THE FUNNY ROBOT
Cardinal is the second robot that Amazon has hired and it looks big, funny, and red.
It is almost 3 meters tall and has 18 robotic arms. Its main task is to load the containers of the products on the Proteus and then unload them in the warehouse.
Moreover, thanks to its small size (it is only 2.4 meters high), it can work in any space.
Amazon said its computer vision systems allow the robotic arm to pick up and lift individual packages, even if they are in a stack.
AMAZON ROBOTICS IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM (ARIS)
The third robot that Amazon has hired is called Amazon Robotics Identification System (ARIS).
It is an artificial vision system that allows robots to recognize products and find their way around the warehouses.
Furthermore, the system can also be used to monitor human operators and to identify any issues in their work.
ARIS was developed by Amazon in collaboration with the startup Orbeus.
CAMERA ROBOTICS
The fourth and final automatic system that Amazon has taken on is called Camera Robotics.
It is a series of robotic cameras that allow robots to see and orient themselves inside the warehouses.
The cameras are capable of capturing high resolution images and can be used to monitor human operators and to identify any issues in their work.
Amazon said the robotic cameras will allow its robots to work in increasingly large and complex warehouses.
MORE EFFICIENT LOGISTICS
With the help of new robots, Amazon is able to manage and ship products more efficiently. The robots are capable of loading and unloading product containers from the truck to the warehouse and vice versa. Moreover, thanks to their small size, they can work in any space.
According to Amazon, its machine vision systems allow robotic arms to pick up and lift individual packages, even if they’re in a stack.
The new robots were introduced after Amazon announced it would invest $800 million to reduce shipping times for its products.
Amazon Web Services president Andy Jassy said the company aims to reduce order lead times from 2 to 3 days to 1 day.
Jassy also said the project will save Amazon “billions of dollars in logistics expenses.”
WILL THEY STEAL WORK FROM THE PEOPLE?
While there are those in general who are convinced that with the advent of technology the human workforce will disappear. Amazon ensures that the continuous development of new robots will have no effect on the use of human resources.
In short, there is still a lot of employment in its storage chain. Another solution could also be to reduce working hours for the same salary.
Here’s what the ecommerce company told a major magazine. The company says the allegations leveled are unfounded, even when he bought the robots with the Kiva acquisition.
The use of 520,000 robotic units has not prevented ” adding more than a million jobs around the world.” Tye Brady, head of technology at Amazon Robotics, assured us that “machines and people will work together.”
“Replacing people with machines would be a mistake,” he said. “If we adopted the philosophy of replacement, we would probably fail.”
Among the reasons is the fact that machines are not yet able to perform all the tasks that employees perform. But when they can do it what will happen?
Brady went on to say that the role of technology is to “increase people’s productivity by freeing them from the repetitive and boring aspects of work.”
“I strongly believe that machines and people will work side by side for a very long time,” he concluded.
The e-commerce, Internet, and cloud services giant set a new record in the first three months of the year at the end of 2021. Profits more than tripled to $8.1 billion.
The increase in turnover was 44% to 108.52 billion, exceeding the 105 billion forecast on the eve.
