After 5000 discarded prototypes, he invented the most powerful appliance ever made. But he also failed with the electric car. It's the story of James Dyson

James Dyson

James Dyson is a British entrepreneur and inventor who is best known for his invention of the very powerful bagless vacuum cleaner. His story combines success, sacrifice, and failure. This is why I think it is one of those stories that are good to know.

His experience is thrilling and compelling. Because James embodies what you should do to achieve all your goals. This is true whether you are an entrepreneur or a person who has any other goal in life.

I do not believe that you do not have ambition. Almost all of us have goals to achieve that make us happy. So let’s get into the details of this story.

The result is an exciting lesson that I will summarize at the end. First, read how James’ success has evolved.

HOW IT ALL BEGAN …

He was born in 1947 in England in the city of Cromer. From an early age he showed a passion for engineering and design.

He attended Malvern College, where he developed an interest in product design. After college, he studied engineering at the Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden.

He began his career as an engineer with the Royal Air Force. He then worked for a company that produced plastic parts for medical equipment.

In 1970 he married Deirdre Walsh and together they had 3 children.

“It’s been eight years since James Dyson was fired from his job after inventing the world’s first dual cyclone vacuum cleaner.”

But thanks to that experience that was apparently painful (indeed it was) which was the stimulus for him to found the Dyson company.

He created the first bagless vacuum cleaner in his garage – he wanted to give his wife a more modern model that vacuumed better and didn’t have the hassle or expense of paper bags, which varied by model and weren’t always readily available.

THE DYSON COMPANY IS BORN IN 1993

After spending years developing prototypes, he founded the Dyson company in 1993. It was a turning point for him and his family.

“After 5,127 discarded prototypes, it took him 14 years to develop “his” device. Today, the word vacuum cleaner is synonymous with the name Dyson.”

Next, he made paperless towels, Airblade Tap, with a maximum airflow of 690 mph for restaurant bathrooms, and then space age fans, vacuum brooms, and cordless handheld vacuum cleaners.

Hair dryers and air guns to style the hair without damaging it, as well as purifiers capable of reducing pollutants and allergens by 99.95% down to 0.1 microns, future LED lamps are among the products offered by the Dyson company.

Vacuum cleaners, fans, heaters, towels and hair dryers are just some of the innovative goods Dyson produces.

But at the beginning he had great success with vacuum cleaners: the Dysons began to be exported to Japan, America and Europe.

In 2001, he was awarded the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Millennium Medal for his invention of the bagless vacuum cleaner.

In 2003, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his contributions to engineering.

DYSON TODAY: A FAMILY-OWNED COMPANY

The Dyson plant

Today Dyson is a family-owned company with headquarters in Wiltshire, England. It has over 1,000 employees and markets its products in over 70 countries.

The Dyson company manufactures a range of home appliances, including vacuum cleaners, fans, heaters, towels and hair dryers.

“Sir James Dyson is always the president of the company. His son Jake is the vice president of engineering. His wife Deirdre Walsh Dyson is the creative director.”

The Dyson company has been profitable every year since it was founded in 1993.

The turnover of the Dyson company was £ 2.5 billion in 2016.

Sir James’ personal fortune Dyson is estimated at £ 7.8 billion.

James Dyson is still the founder and CEO of the Dyson company.

THE FAILED PROJECT WITH THE ELECTRIC CAR

In 2013, Dyson announced that it was entering the electric car market. The project was codenamed “Project V.”

“The company said it had invested £ 2 billion in the project and planned to have the car on the market by 2020.”

However, in September 2017, the company announced that it was abandoning the project.

The reason given was that the company needed to focus on more important projects, such as developing new products and expanding into new markets.

Many experts believe that the real reason for abandoning the project was that the company had not been able to produce a car that met its high standards.

The failure of the electric car project does not diminish James Dyson’s status as an engineering genius. He is still the inventor of the bagless vacuum cleaner, one of the most important household appliances of the last century.

DYSON’S PHILOSOPHY

James Dyson’s philosophy is always the same, summed up in three words: “Product is king.”

Every time Sir Dyson puts the “finished” label on one of his new products, it demonstrates how technology can improve an industry where previously there seemed to be nothing left to explore.

In this way, Dyson started from a garage and built a family-owned, multinational company and has passed the age of 70, continuing to dream and to design: his company has a turnover of 4 billion dollars a year, employs 12,500 people, mostly young engineers, and one of the best performers in the world in terms of investment in research and development.

NEVER BE DISCOURAGED BY FAILURE

Sir James Dyson has never been discouraged by bankruptcy. On the contrary, he sees it as a necessary step on the road to success.

“I have failed many times,” he says. I have had more failures than anyone I know. It is part of the process of invention.”

This persistence and willingness to face failure has led him to become one of the most successful entrepreneurs in history.

James Dyson’s is a story of determination, hard work, and innovation. He has managed to create some of the most important appliances of our time and has never been discouraged by failure.

This makes him an excellent role model for young people who are looking to start their own business.
